Toilet Installation and Wax Ring Replacement in Culver City, CA

Service: Toilet Installation | Location: Culver City, CA | Result: Completed same day

The Problem

A Culver City homeowner near Washington Boulevard noticed their master bathroom toilet had started rocking slightly and had a faint sewage odor near the base. The toilet was original to the home — a 3.5 gallon per flush model from the early 1990s. The homeowner wanted to address the rocking toilet and upgrade to a water-efficient model at the same time.

What We Found

We removed the toilet and inspected the wax ring and floor flange. The wax ring had completely failed and was no longer sealing the toilet to the drain flange. Sewage gas had been leaking into the bathroom for an unknown period. The floor flange was intact and at the correct height. The subfloor showed minor moisture damage from the failed seal that had dried out.

What We Did

We installed a new double-thickness wax ring and new flange bolts, set and leveled the new 1.28 gallon per flush Kohler comfort height toilet, connected the supply line, and tested for leaks at the base and supply connection. We documented the installation with the old toilet serial number and new toilet model information for the LADWP toilet replacement rebate program. The homeowner qualified for a $100 LADWP rebate on the high-efficiency unit.

Result

The rocking toilet and sewage odor were fully resolved. The new comfort height toilet uses 1.28 gallons per flush compared to 3.5 gallons for the old unit — a water savings of over 60% per flush. We provided all rebate documentation to the homeowner for submission to LADWP. The job was completed in under two hours.
